Minglik Sar Expedition

Detail

The Minglik Sar Expedition is an 18-day journey into the “Valley of Mountaineers.” Shimshal is home to some of the world’s most elite high-altitude porters, and you will be walking in their footsteps. The approach takes us through the dramatic Shimshal Gorge—a feat of ancient local engineering—up to the high pastures of the Shimshal Pass (4,735m). Here, amidst turquoise alpine lakes and wandering yaks, we establish our base camp for the summit push. The climb itself is a non-technical snow slope, but the altitude and the wild Karakoram weather make it a true test of spirit.

Trek Highlights

  • The Summit (6,050m): Conquer your first 6,000er with a panoramic view of the Karakoram, Hindukush, and Kunlun ranges.

  • Shimshal Pass: Camp at one of the most beautiful high-altitude pastures in the world, flanked by the crystal-clear twin lakes.

  • Cultural Immersion: Spend time in Shimshal Village, learning about the unique Wakhi culture and their mountain-dwelling lifestyle.

  • The “Pamir” Experience: Witness the vast, rolling highlands where the locals graze thousands of yaks and sheep in the summer.

  • K2 View: On a clear day, catch a glimpse of the “King of Mountains,” K2, from the summit of Minglik Sar.

Itinerary

Welcome to Pakistan. You will be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel. We’ll hold a pre-expedition briefing in the evening to check gear and discuss the route.

Day 2: Islamabad to Gilgit & Karimabad

We take the morning flight to Gilgit (weather permitting). Upon landing, we drive to Karimabad, Hunza. If the flight is cancelled, we begin the drive along the Karakoram Highway, staying overnight in Chilas.

Day 3: Acclimatization in Hunza

A day to adjust to the altitude. We explore the 900-year-old Altit Fort and the local bazaar. We’ll do a short hike to Duiker to get our lungs ready for the days ahead.

Day 4: Drive to Shimshal Village

We leave the KKH and enter the narrow, winding road to Shimshal. This 4-hour Jeep journey is an adventure in itself. We spend the night in a local guesthouse, finalizing our porter loads.

Day 5: Trek to Ghar Sar (3,300m)

Our trek begins. We follow the Shimshal River, crossing suspension bridges and entering the gorge. The first day is a steady 4-5 hour walk to the campsite at Ghar Sar.

Day 6: Trek to Wooch Furzeen (3,800m)

A challenging day with some steep ascents and descents. We cross the “Chichan Bridge” and climb to the high meadows of Wooch Furzeen, surrounded by birch trees and rocky spires.

Day 7: Trek to Arbob Purian (3930m)

We continue our ascent into the high country. The terrain becomes more open as we reach Arbob Purian, a traditional summer grazing spot for the Shimshali people.

Day 8: Trek to Shujerav (4,350m)

The air begins to thin. We trek toward Shujerav, the last major settlement before the pass. You’ll see the first large herds of yaks here.

Day 9: Reach Shimshal Pass / Base Camp (4,735)

A breathtaking day as we reach the Shimshal Pass. We set up our Base Camp near the twin lakes. The majestic pyramid of Minglik Sar now dominates the skyline directly above us.

Day 10: Rest & Acclimatization

A vital rest day. We practice basic crampon and ice axe techniques on the lower snow slopes and enjoy the serenity of the Pamir pastures.

Day 11: Summit Push: Minglik Sar (6,050m)

Summit Day. We start at 2:00 AM. The climb is a long, steady pull up snow and scree slopes (30 to 35 angle). After 7-9 hours, we reach the summit. After celebrating the views, we descend back to Base Camp for a well-earned feast.

Day 12:Contingency Day

Reserved for bad weather or further acclimatization. If not used, we can explore the nearby Quz Sar (5,900) or simply rest.

Day 13: Trek back to Arbob Purian

We begin our descent, re-tracing our steps through the high valleys with much lighter hearts and heavier camera rolls!

Day 14: Trek back to Wooch Furzeen

Continuing the descent through the rugged gorge. The increased oxygen levels will make you feel like you’re flying.

Day 15: Return to Shimshal Village

Final day of trekking. We return to the village for a farewell celebration with our porters and hosts.

FAQ

How technical is the climb?

It is “Moderately Strenuous” but “Non-Technical.” You don’t need to be a pro climber, but you should be comfortable using crampons and an ice axe on snow slopes.

What is the best month for this?

July and August are the peak months. The pass is green, the yaks are out, and the snow on the peak is usually stable.

Is there a minimum age?

We recommend participants be at least 18 years old and in excellent cardiovascular health.

Why Karakoram Mountain Experts?

Our deep ties to the Shimshal community mean our guides are the very people who grew up on these slopes. We prioritize safety and slow acclimatization to ensure a 90% summit success rate.
