The Rakaposhi Base Camp Trek, expertly managed by Karakoram Mountain Experts, starts from the picturesque village of Minapin in the Nagar Valley. This is a relatively short but steep journey that rewards you with views of the Minapin Glacier and the giant ice wall of Rakaposhi. It is one of the few places in the world where you can stand so close to an 8,000m-class peak (in terms of vertical rise) in just two days of walking.
The Minapin Glacier: A “psychedelic” sea of ice with deep blue crevasses that you can practically touch.
Tagaphari (Base Camp): A lush green meadow at the foot of the mountain where avalanches can often be heard (safely) echoing off the peaks.
Diran Peak (7,266m): Excellent views of Rakaposhi’s “twin” mountain across the glacier.

The Karakoram Mountain Experts team will meet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel. We’ll spend the afternoon at the Ministry of Tourism for a trek briefing and enjoy a welcome dinner in the capital.
We aim for the scenic flight to Gilgit. If the weather doesn’t cooperate, we drive the Karakoram Highway (KKH) to Chilas. The drive follows the Indus River and offers a glimpse of the ancient rock carvings along the riverbank.
We continue our drive through the stunning Hunza and Nagar valleys. A short detour from the KKH takes us to Minapin (2,000m). We spend the night in a traditional guesthouse (like the famous Osho Thang) to enjoy a local meal and prepare our packs.
The trek begins behind the village. We follow a steady, zigzagging path through juniper and pine forests. After about 3 hours of walking (5.8km), we reach Hapakun (2,800m), a grassy meadow with a stream. We set up camp here for the night with views of the Hachindar and Maiun peaks.
The trail becomes steeper as we climb toward the ridge. As you emerge from the forest, the “Shiny Wall” of Rakaposhi suddenly dominates the sky. A 3-hour hike brings us to Tagaphari (3,300m), our base camp. The campsite is a verdant bowl perched right above the Minapin Glacier.
A day to explore the ridge (3,800m) for a 360 view of the Karakoram. For the adventurous, we can cross the glacier to visit the Diran Peak Base Camp. The ice formations here are massive and offer incredible photography opportunities.
The descent to Minapin is fast but requires care on the knees (taking about 2–3 hours). From Minapin, our Jeeps take us to Karimabad in Hunza. We celebrate the trek with a visit to Baltit Fort and a hot shower at our hotel.
A day for recovery. We visit the turquoise Attabad Lake for a boat ride and explore the Passu Cones. It’s a perfect end to the mountain portion of the trip.
We head back to Gilgit, stopping at the Rakaposhi Viewpoint on the highway to look back at the peak we just trekked to.
A morning flight back to Islamabad. If the flight is delayed, this serves as our buffer day to ensure you don’t miss your international connection.
The Karakoram Mountain Experts team will provide a final transfer to the airport for your journey home.
